This year, five of our staff members entered items for the National Craft award competition of the Innibos Art Festival in Mpumalanga. We are so proud of them. The Innibos craft awards were also the culmination and wrapping up of this year’s National Art’s council programme for 2016-17 meant to develop and promote Limpopo’s crafters.
Madi a Thavha’s Design & Textile team
Tebocho, Ndifi and Susan, entered the competition with textile products. Tebocho appliqued traditional patterns with silk on linen cushions and wall panels with accents in beads. Ndifi got her inspiration from Khoi-San rock-art of the Soutpansberg and used dye techniques and stenciling on soft furnishings. Susan tied and dyed scarves in silk and cotton. New intern Linda Rikhotso quickly caught on making jewelry and seems to take after her late father the renowned artist Phillip Rikothso.
Handyman Paul tried his hand at making Paula Maythem’s Baobab pendant light -design. Paula was one of the winners of the collaboration design-for-Limpopo- project between Madi a Thavha and Design Time school of interior design in Cape Town. Paul made a beautiful pendant light out of the fruit of the magnificent baobab trees of Limpopo.
While the creatives are creative, all the other staff are all working at top speed to keep the lodge and gardens in spic and span condition for the upcoming busy season when many Europeans like to come to Limpopo and Madi a Thavha during their summer holidays.
