Boababs galore on this unusual and scenic rural route to Pafuri, the most northern gate of Kruger National Park. One of only two border posts (for 4×4 adventurers) to Mozambique is also tucked in at  ‘Crooks corner’ where South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique’s borders intersect.

This is a “early-up”- route from Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge and leads through rural Venda villages and the varied types of indigenous vegetation, from misty belt to the arid and textured north through to Pafuri gate. Following this route to Pafuri will take about 5 hours and include wonderful opportunities for unusual sightseeing. One needs to calculate how long it will take get to ones overnight accommodation in the park from Pafuri gate too.

Waterfall, tea plantations, drums and Art

From our lodge one goes to the N1 and then go North turning east at the Witvlag-road going past subtropical fruit orchards and tribal land. The road passes the Tshivhase and Mukumbani tea plantations providing work to two thousand people from the surrounding villages.  They produce the Midi tea brand. A perfect cool spot for a break is the Phipidi waterfalls, from where the journey continue, passing Donald Fraser hospital towards Mutale. At Tshandama Freedom market, one can stop to admire the deep sound of traditional drums made for various traditional dances of which the most famous is the Domba or Python dance.

Enter Baobab country and see famous potter on the way

From the Sasol petrol station the road continues North in the direction of Thengwe and Muswodi where you enter arid and beautiful Baobob country. At the sign of Tshixwadza / Dalavhuredzi waterfalls, turn left to Mufulwi village, where famous Venda potter Rebecca Matibe can be visited. At her colourful homestead with wall paintings and sculptures, you can she how she makes and decorates her famous pots. After this experience the traveler follows the main road still going North, and can enjoy an abundance of baobab trees, some with soccer fields in their midst! Before entering the Kruger National Park at Pafuri gate, one can visit the magnificent 2000 year old Big Tree near Sagole Spa and then just a short trip north from there will find Pafuri gate.
