our story

Our 4-star-graded and Fair Trade certified lodge is situated in a valley of the Soutpansberg Mountains 11 km west of Louis Trichardt/Makhado in Northern Limpopo. We are on the scenic R522 road that taps off the N1 in Louis Trichardt/Makhado, going past Madi a Thavha towards Mapungubwe National Park, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The National Kruger Park’s Punda Maria-gate is 160km east of us. The lodge covers an area of 320 hectares and is located on the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg Mountain range. Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge is close to Louis Trichardt (or Makhado - this town is in a name-change phase) where guests can find most consumer items and services. Louis Trichardt has schools, churches, hospitals, general stores and other facilities like well-managed golf and bowling courses, tennis and squash courts. Soutpansberg literally means ‘Salt Pan Mountains’ and is derived from the natural salt pans that are located at the northern foothills of the mountains, close to the small farming community of Vivo and Alldays.

world class services

The lodge is in a ‘water rich’ area of the province. The average annual rainfall is much higher on the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg Mountain range than on the more arid northern slopes.

The summer rains here are often accompanied by spectacular thunderstorms. Mean temperatures are between 15 – 25 degrees in winter and between 20 – 35 degrees in summer. The main wind direction is from the northwest, but because of the enclosed basin, the wind tends to swirl around, mostly during the evenings. Mist occurs mostly in winter and often after rainfall in summer.

Fair Trade in Tourism

Madi a Thavha’s focus is to offer hospitality services with cultural and nature experiences to our guests. We also have a Textile & Design studio at the lodge, a CraftArt shop, a Cultural Heritage centre, all in an integrated network supporting 40 artists and crafter-groups in rural Northern Limpopo. We believe in building strong relationships with our employees, their families, and the local communities around us, all the time.

Madi a Thavha has been accredited to Fair Trade in Tourism (FTT) since May 2008. FTT is a non-profit organisation setting fair trade-standards and supports hospitality establishments to work in line with these. A list of Fair Trade accredited establishments in South Africa can be found on www.fairtrade.travel. We work hard to maintain the strict assessment criteria, you can therefore be assured that you support responsible tourism by staying at Madi a Thavha.
